Waterproofing

Waterproofing

Water penetration is one of the most devastating things that can happen to our building. It weakens the structural integrity of structures, making them susceptible to partial or even total collapse. And while the roof plays a significant role in preventing water penetration, it’s not entirely effective. Thus, other measures like waterproofing building structures need to be taken.

Queensland Interior Linings is a waterproofing contractor based on the Sunshine Coast. Our team comprises painting and plastering experts who help us provide quality waterproofing services to Gold Coast, Brisbane, Townsville, and Byron Bay.

What is waterproofing

Waterproofing is the process of installing barriers on the walls, ceilings, floor, and other surfaces in your home to protect them from moisture penetration. It’s essential because water penetration causes leaks and damages that weakens the affected structure and encourages mould, mildew, and other fungal growths due to dampness.

Waterproofing is thus, a key requirement of Australian building standards. Minimum requirements like the waterproofing of shower walls, laundry walls, bathroom floors, and step-downs to floors are mentioned in the Australian Standards AS 3740 and Building Code.

The regulations also state that only trained professionals with a waterproofing license in NSW can perform the task. They must also be QLD qualified and provide a statement of compliance once they complete a project.

Types of waterproofing

The most common forms of waterproofing used in construction include;

Cementitious waterproofing

This is one of the easiest methods of waterproofing available. The materials used are readily available and easy to mix and apply in wet areas like toilets and bathrooms. The method also uses breathable waterproof coatings that give surfaces both positive and negative-side waterproofing

Bituminous coating waterproofing

Also known as asphalt coating, this method uses bitumen-based materials to waterproof a building. The materials used are polymer grade for flexibility and have reinforced fibre properties to protect against water infiltration.

However, bituminous coating waterproofing is not suitable for structures that are exposed to sunlight. This is because it becomes fragile and brittle after prolonged exposure. Thus, this type of waterproofing is best suited for concrete foundations.

Butimous membrane waterproofing

This uses a self-adhesive membrane to waterproof surfaces. The self-adhesive nature comes from the combination of asphalt, fillers, and polymers, and certain oils and resins may be added to boost the adhesion.

Butimous membrane waterproofing can be used to waterproof decks and even low-sloped roofs. This is highly due to its proven performance and ability to withstand wear and tear due to the presence of granular mineral aggregate.

Liquid waterproofing membrane:

These membranes are applied in liquid form. First, a primer coat is spread on the waterproof surface, and then a couple of coats of liquid waterproofing are applied via spray, roller, or towel.

Liquid waterproofing membranes offer more flexibility than most forms of waterproofing. In fact, some materials have elongation that reaches as high as 280 per cent. When the liquid cures, it turns into a rubbery coating on the surface.

Polyethylene liquid membrane waterproofing

This uses a self-adhesive membrane to waterproof surfaces. The self-adhesive nature comes from the combination of asphalt, fillers, and polymers, and certain oils and resins may be added to boost the adhesion.

Butimous membrane waterproofing can be used to waterproof decks and even low-sloped roofs. This is highly due to its proven performance and ability to withstand wear and tear due to the presence of granular mineral aggregate.
